The City of South Lyon, Michigan is located in southwestern Oakland County.  The center of its business district is at 10 Mile Road and Pontiac Trail, known as Lake Street and Lafayette Street within the city limits.  Just 3.5 square miles in size, the city offers small town living, yet is within five miles of two interstate highways and close to major metropolitan areas and international airports.

A Great Place to Live...

The City offers a wide variety of housing options in all price ranges.  Picturesque Victorian homes line the city streets.  Numerous developments offer the latest in single-family living, apartment and condominium living.  South Lyon offers a superb quality of life that is unsurpassed.

Education

The key to success of any community is the school system.  The South Lyon school system operates seven elementary schools, two middle school and two state-of-the-art high schools.  At all levels, South Lyon students score at or above state averages on the MEAP and other standardized tests.  All schools in the system have been accredited by the North Central Association (NCA), testifying to the quality of the academic and extra-curricular programs offered.

Health Care

A health care clinic operated by Providence Hospital and numerous private practice physicians are located in South Lyon.  St Joseph Hospital and the University of Michigan Medical Center are within a 30-minute drive.

Emergency Services

South Lyon provides police, fire protection and emergency medical services, including advanced life support, 24 hours a day.

Retail

Along the walkable streets of South Lyon, turn-of-the-century store fronts are interspersed with unique and modern architecture.  Quaint and compact, the pedestrian friendly downtown offers the perfect location for any retail business.

Ample parking and a variety of shops make the downtown a destination of choice.  South Lyon's Downtown Development Authority is quite active and has played an integral part in the new streetscape project.

South Lyon offers numerous mini-retail malls providing additional retail opportunities to serve the growing population.

Utilities

The South Lyon community is served by Detroit Edison for electrical, Consumers Energy for natural gas and Ameritech for local telephone services.

The city operates its own water system, with a storage capacity of 1.5 million gallons including an elevated storage tank, as well as its own sanitary and storm sewer lines.

The city's wastewater treatment facility has an average daily flow of 1.2 million gallons with a peak capacity of 1.5 million gallons.  Sludge hauling facilities can remove stabilized liquid and dry sludge for use as fertilizer on local farm land.

No matter how you spend your leisure time - whether it's hiking and biking in the spring, golf and tennis in the summer, color tours in the fall, or skiing and ice skating in the winter - you'll find the South Lyon area a great place to play.  An abundance of nearby lakes offers year-round water activities.  State and metro parks provide popular campsites and picnic facilities.  Within a 15 minute drive are at least two private and 11 public golf courses.  You'll find it all close to home in South Lyon.

City Parks

South Lyon parks are the scene of year-round community activities such as summer Concerts in the Park, Depot Days, Pumpkin Fest and other downtown events.  McHattie Park has something for everyone, including playground equipment, little league ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, sled hill, outdoor ice skating and hockey rink, along with plenty of open spaces for picnics and outdoor fun.  McHattie park is home to the historic Witch's Hat Depot Museum, the Freight House and the Victorian Gazebo.  Come and enjoy! Bicycle/Pedestrian Paths

Residents often spend their leisure hours biking, walking, strolling or roller blading along South Lyon's 4.5-mile paved pedestrian bicycle path.  Access is available from many areas of the city and future pedestrian segments are planned, including a 10.4 mile path connecting South Lyon to area state and metro parks and to the city of Wixom.  Known as a walkable community, South Lyon beckons pedestrians to walk through the entire city.  Join us for fun and fitness.
