The South Lyon Parks & Recreation Commission is one of eleven organizations that were recently awarded minigrants from the Brooksie Way Minigrant program.  A check for $250 was presented on September 14, 2010 to Commission Chairperson Mike Olando by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.  The Brooksie Way is an annual competitive running event held in memory of Patterson’s son, Brooks Jr. (Brooksie), to encourage community fitness.  Proceeds from this run are used to fund the minigrant program.  Minigrants are awarded to organizations throughout Oakland County to help foster and promote programs that encourage public health and fitness.  The goal is to make Oakland County a better place for its citizens.

The Parks & Recreation Commission applied for a minigrant to help fund its Jingle Bell Walk scheduled for Saturday December 4th as part of South Lyon’s Cool Yule celebration.  The Brooksie Way Minigrant Board felt that promoting a community walk in the winter was an innovative idea and one worthy of their support.  Like the Commission, the Brooksie Way Board believes that community fitness is a year-round objective and the Jingle Bell Walk will be a festive way to encourage family participation in an outdoor activity in spite of colder temperatures.

The Jingle Bell Walk will begin in downtown South Lyon at around 9:30 am and the route will be approximately 2.5 miles along city sidewalks and a portion of the Rail Trail.  Hot chocolate will be available to all participants at the finish.  Additional details will be provided in upcoming issues of the Herald and on the City's website.
