LABOR DAY BRIDGE WALK
September 1, 2014

The City of South Lyon Parks and Recreation Commission holds an annual Community Labor Day Bridge Walk every Labor Day as part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. Similar to the way the Mighty Mac links Michiganís two peninsulas, the Labor Day Walks link communities together for health, fitness and active living. Participation in this event is free! ALL AGES ARE WELCOME!!

Participants have the option to walk a 2.5 mile loop or do the entire 5 mile course which will go along the Huron Valley Rail Trail and through downtown South Lyon.

Registration information will be posted as the event gets closer.

The City has over 200 acres of parkland including: McHattie Park, Volunteer Park, Paul Baker Memorial Park (Fountain Park), Andover Park, Columbia Park and the Huron Valley Rail Trail.

While the Department of Public Works (DPW) oversees maintenance and upkeep of the park system, the Parks and Recreation Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Manager regarding the development of park land. The South Lyon Area Recreation Authority oversees all recreation programming.

 About our Parks:
McHattie Park: Located in the heart of the City of South Lyon just off Lafayette Street, this nearly 15 acre park has something for everyone, including playground equipment, little league ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, sledding hill, along with plenty of open spaces for picnics and outdoor fun. McHattie Park is also home to the historic Witch's Hat Depot Museum, Little Village Chapel, the Freight House and the Victorian Gazebo. A great place to walk the dog, take the children to play or just enjoy the views from a park bench. Planning a party or family reunion?  Call the Clerk's office at 248-437-1735 for picnic pavillion reservation information.

Volunteer Park: This 130 acre park is home to the majority of the City's sports facilities. Located on Dixboro Road between Nine and Eight Mile Roads (21620 N. Dixboro), the park features: baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a sand volley ball court and a multi-use trail. Volunteer Park is the place to come and see a game or get back to nature.

Paul Baker Memorial Park: At the intersection of Lake Street and Reynold Sweet Parkway, along the Huron Valley Rail Trail, you'll find the Paul Baker Memorial Park. With a beautiful fountain and gazebo, this small park is a great place to stop and rest as you make your way along the trail.
